Tour Details

This area is the second largest arid zone of the country, being technically a Tropical dry forest of more than 330 km2 located in the department of Huila. This place is characterized by orange, grey and ash colours in different parts of the whole area. As it´s far from big cities, there is few light pollution and it is perfect for stargazing, also offering nice hikes and even pools with natural water extracted from the ground.

  • Entrance to the paleontological museum in Villavieja.
  • Hike through “El Cuzco” sector (Red desert).

Recommendations

  • Tatacoa Desert offers special climatological weather conditions, that require certain preparation, so it is important to take into account:
  • Follow and abide all the instructions of the guides during each one of the trails and tours to be taken.
  • Be prepared for a hot and really dry local weather.
  • We will provide water for refilling, so we ask you to take your own rigid recipient in order to avoid waste generation.
  • For the plane option we ask you to confirm us at least 15 days before the flight.
  • Follow and abide all the instructions of the guides during each one of the trails and tours to be taken

What to take?

  • Cap or hat & sunscreen to protect your head and face from the sun.
  • Repellent and take cautions against mosquitos.
  • Swimming suit. (there will a pool in the acommodation
  • Torch.
  • Clothes for warm weather and preferably long-sleeved clothes to avoid sunburn
  • Take apprpriated footwear for the hikes in the desert (trekking boots are advisable)
  • Take a rigid water bottle (preferably not disposable) for the water.
  • It is advisable to take binoculars to see birds and fauna.
  • Take some additional money to the desert as the ATM`s at Villavieja town are limited and sometimes they present failures.
  • Take personal documents and medical insurance

➡ Option of transportation in flights Bogota-Neiva (1 or both ways) using EasyFly airline. *(For this option we ask to reserve in advance, at least 15 days preferably in order to check flight availability and guarantee reasonable airfares).
➡ Option to do a horse-back riding in the desert (30.000 COP per hour).

Itinerary

Day 1

(06:00) – Meeting & breakfast in the town of Villavieja, after that visit of the paleontological museum, “Totumo” museum & tour in the town; then a ride in the transportation to the desert where we will start doing a Hike through the Cuzco Sector (Red Desert). Afterwards we will head to take lunch in a restaurant located in hotel with a pool and in the afternoon you will have the chance to enjoy the pool or will have the option to do a horse-back riding activity through the gray area of the desert, after that you will be taken in a private transportation to Villavieja town where you will have the chance to connect with other cities such as Neiva.

*We can offer you as well picking from Neiva and flights from and to that city departing from Bogotá.
